Andreas Coucounis & Co LLC had the pleasure in welcoming a number of undergraduate law students from Cyprus and abroad to the law firm’s Summer Internship Programme during May to July 2022.

This year we had the opportunity to welcome Victor Pinconnet of the University of Nantes in France, Joya Lahoud of UCLan in Cyprus, Stavros Stavraki of the University of Cyprus and Nicoletta Adamou of UCLan in Cyprus.

During their internship, the law students experienced the everyday life of a law firm in Cyprus. They were given the opportunity to attend court, to study a variety of cases in different areas of law, to draft documents, and to interact with clients.

This is what our interns had to say about their experience:

Joya Lahoud of UCLan University had this to say:

“This internship was a valuable experience and an interesting practical introduction to the field of law. As, with the help of the amazing personnel at the firm, I had the chance to perceive what a law career really involves both in office and court. In simple terms, this internship gave me a flavor of how wide the gap between legal theory and practice is. And yes, legal practice is way more intellectually demanding! But overall, I really enjoyed experiencing this short process that evolved and improved over time; I enjoyed making mistakes and learning from my mistakes with the help of the senior partners of the firm. I learnt a lot from the character and the tasks assigned by each partner and particularly by Mrs Dimitria Coucouni that was an inspiring, experienced role model for me as a female. Further, what I really found interesting in this internship, being my first internship, was my exposure to the legal ladder and the different goals and roles each person has depending on their stage on the legal ladder. Lastly, I would like to highlight that for me personally, this internship was a confirmation that I chose the right career for me as, it taught me that to become a 10, one should be a 1, work beyond themselves as a lawyer to become a 5, and think outside the box to become a 10.”

Victor Pinçonnet had this to say:

During my twelve-week internship at the firm, I had the opportunity to perform several

interesting tasks. The comparative work allowed me to discover Cypriot law, which was

totally unknown to me. It allowed me to review points of French law and to put them in

perspective with those of Cypriot law. It is a very enriching work which allows me to

understand certain aspects of law and certain practices and I appreciated this all the more

as the history of Cyprus explains many particularities linked in particular to the constitutional

practice or to the influence of the British Empire.

What I liked most about this experience was the time spent with Marios, which allowed me to

experience court life as a young lawyer. It was really interesting to see the multitude of tasks

that a lawyer could perform, as well as the many people he could deal with. This is an aspect

of the legal profession that I underestimated and that makes me want to be a lawyer. The

hearing I was invited to attend was also very interesting in my opinion, because it is

obviously the symbolic image that we have of the profession of lawyer.

I also appreciated the consideration given to my personal interests, especially concerning

research with topics to compare in relation to my Master's thesis and the possibility to take

advantage of the island's libraries.

I think the experience could have been optimal with some changes. However, it is necessary

to remember that, as I do not speak Greek, I understand that some tasks could not be given

to me. However, I would have appreciated to attend more meetings with clients, especially

those in English. I would have liked to have a little more concrete tasks to do, as I

sometimes felt that I could do my work from home as well as from the office. Again, I am well

aware that my lack of Greek language skills may have been an obstacle.

I would like to thank you sincerely for your welcome and for giving me the opportunity to do

this internship in your office.
